The sound produced from a good spline drivecoupling is muffled, and can be heard as theengine is cranking. The sound is muffledbecause the external spline on the spline drivering is nylon coated. When the nylon coating, which is only 13 to 20 thousandths of an inchthick, on the spline drive ring is good, it willmate tightly with the engine’s internal splineteeth and produce a muffled sound. The sound produced from a worn-out splinedrive coupling is a very distinct metallicclanking sound that can be easily heard as theengine is cranking. When the nylon coating onthe spline drive ring is worn-out, it engages in ametal to metal backlashing with the flywheel’sinternal spline teeth which are uncoated. Thiscauses the metallic clanking sound.bSemi-AnnualTransmission/Engine SplineDrivea. The second type of inspection is the manualaudio method.Metallicclanking soundis heard.WARNINGFuel cut-off control at driver’s positionmust be pulled all the way out to preventengine from starting. Personnel could beinjured or killed if engine starts duringthis PMCS check.b. Loosen the three wing nuts and clamps toremove the engine’s rear access panel from thecrew compartment. This will access theengine’s variable drive assembly pulley.c. The pulley has three jacking bolt holes with 3/8’’ course thread.
