TM 9-2350-267-10AUTOMATIC FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM MANUAL DISCHARGESYSTEM (AFES/MDS) COMPONENTSThe AFES/MDS system allows the crew to manually activate, by mechanical means, oneengine and two crew compartment fire extinguishers. The following are AFES/MDS com-ponents:LANYARD ASSEMBLY - Controls and protects the mechanical cabling connecting thefire extinguishers to the lanyard cable pull handle.LANYARD CABLE PULL HANDLE - Mechanically activates one engine and two crewcompartment extinguishers. Located outside the vehicle near the driver’s hatch, it is theonly way to activate the second of two engine compartment fire extinguishers. A crewmember must exert a 25-pound pull to break the sealed safety wire on the handle and topull handle to its fullest extension to discharge the extinguishers. The safety wire preventsunauthorized/accidental use of AFES/MDS.4-19
