MAINTENANCE OF AIR CLEANER ELEMENT (M548A1) Continued
DO NOT clean the air cleaner element using gasoline or petroleum solvent.
Go easy so you dont damage the element. Dont hit or drop the element on its ends.
You can clean the air cleaner element anytime by jarring it to knock dirt loose. If you dont
have to use the carrier for a few hours, you can wash the element with soap and water. You can
blow the filter clean if you have access to compressed air.
Clean by jarring.
To clean an open end element tap the fins gently with your hands, then tap the sides to knock dirt out.
To clean a closed end element tap the sides gently with your hands.
Dry the air cleaner element before you put it back in the carrier. If you try to drive with a wet
element, youll end up with an air cleaner full of mud and a carrier that wont go.
Clean with soap and water.
Wash the element with warm water and liquid soap.
Make sure the element is dry before you put it back in the carrier.
Air pressure in excess of 30 psi (207 kPa) can injure personnel. Do not direct pressurized air at
yourself or others. Always wear goggles.
Clean with compressed air.
To clean an open end element direct 100 psi (690 kPa) compressed air through the element from inside to outside,
down the outside all around, and inside to outside again.
To clean a closed end element direct 100 psi (690 Pa) compressed air through the element from inside to outside.
